BIRDLAND RETREAT ANIMALS
Our favourite locals are the Brush-tail Possums; black-tail and the rare white-tail which call occasionally after sunset. Kangaroos and wallabies visit late evening and very early morning. Unfortunately they dine out on our introduced plants. You can hear them hopping near the house on a still evening..thump, thump, chomp chomp.
Pygmy Possums are rarely seen. The size of a mouse, they can be mistaken for vermin rodents. Our planting program will encourage them to live here; they are delightful little creatures which live on the nectar of native plants.
There are batts and bats in the ceiling. One type insulates the house and the other scares the pants off some guests who have probably read too many horror stories. They are small, furry, harmless mammals which often fly around inside the house until they get their bearings. If that bothers you, try turning off all internal lights, leave an outside light on and open the double doors then they will fly outside but not before sucking a litre or two of blood from the nearest human (just joking).
PETS
Dogs & other pets are not a good mix with native birds & animals. We have created a bird sanctuary which excludes domestic animals.
Here are some links to native animals of the South West of Western Australia:
